The Electrolysis Process: What a Session Actually Looks Like

Electrolysis is precise, methodical work performed follicle by follicle — understanding what a session actually involves helps set realistic expectations for first-time clients in NYC.

Consultation and Assessment

Every electrolysis plan starts with an assessment of hair density, coarseness, and growth pattern in the treatment area. Corley Collins, licensed electrologist & co-founder of SC Skin & Co, uses this to determine which modality and settings suit your skin and hair type before treatment begins.

The Modalities

Electrolysis uses one of three approaches: galvanic (a chemical reaction that destroys the follicle), thermolysis (heat-based, faster per follicle), or blend (combining both). Each has tradeoffs in speed, comfort, and effectiveness depending on hair type and area — a decision made by the electrologist, not a fixed default.

During the Session

A fine, sterile probe is inserted alongside each hair into the follicle, and a small current is delivered to disable the follicle's ability to regrow hair. Sessions on smaller areas (brows, upper lip) may take 15 minutes; larger areas (legs, back) require longer or multiple sessions to cover fully.

Sensation and Comfort

Most clients describe a brief heat or pinching sensation per follicle — the vast majority tolerate treatment without numbing, though topical numbing can be discussed for more sensitive areas.

Why Only Some Follicles Are Treated Each Visit

Hair grows in cycles, and only actively growing (anagen-phase) follicles respond fully to treatment. This is why a single session cannot capture every follicle in an area, and why a course of visits — not one appointment — is standard.
